ARTnews is printed on web offset presses and is perfect bound. The trim size is 8 3/16 x 10 8/7 inches.

Live Area: Live matter must be at least 3/8 inch from the trim.

Bleed: At least 1/8 inch bleed on all sides.

Spreads: Live matter must be at least 1/4 inch from gutter (both sides).

Digital Files: ARTnews accepts digital files in the following formats or applications: Acrobat PDF, Adobe Illustrator, Adobe Photoshop, and QuarkXpress. We do not accept InDesign, CS or Pagemaker formats at this time, however all three applications generate print-ready PDF’s which you may submit. ARTnews runs on a Mac OSX platform. All fonts, illustrations and images must accompany the ad layout on disk.

Macintosh OSX format files are preferred. To avoid font problems we recommend saving PC files as PDF, EPS or TIFF files, all fonts converted to outlines (or, “curves”). All images must be 300 dpi (dots per inch) and color images must be converted to CMYK (Cyan, Magenta, Yellow and Black). Ink density of the file must not exceed a maximum of 280%. Knockout white type should be no smaller than 7pt. All files must be accompanied by a proof. See further proofing guidelines and options, next page.

Shipping Instructions: ARTnews prefers to receive ads on disk with an acceptable color proof.

Important Notes:

Proofs, Appearance, & Production Charges

ALL FILES MUST BE ACCOMPANIED BY A PROOF: The minimum acceptable proof is a fax proof for content. ARTnews will not guarantee color unless provided with a SWOP standard proof (Kodak Approval, Fuji, Agfa, Imation, or similar; including color bars. For a more complete list and further information on contract proofs please visit www.swop.org.) If files are received without an acceptable proof we will contact you and request that one of the following options is approved:

1. Use existing supplied proof with the understanding that the color is subject to the color output of ARTnews. Requires at least a fax proof for content.
2. ARTnews is to create a color proof and bill the client $100 per page. Note: this is intended for color confirmation only. ARTnews assumes that all files are final and printready. Any work done by ARTnews to alter a file will result in additional production charges. Additional proofs after resubmitting files will be an additional $100.
3. If no proof is preset ARTnews must receive a fax proof to confirm type and placement.

PRODUCTION CHARGES: If we find that there are production charges associated with supplied materials we will fax you a quote and require your approval before proceeding. Please see below for detailed guidelines to avoid problems and descriptions of common production charges.

Guidelines for Submitting Final, Print-Ready Advertisements:

1. Color advertisements must be submitted with a SWOP-approved proof as stated above.
2. Color digital ads must be submitted in CMYK format. Black & White digital ads should be converted to grayscale. ARTnews will not be responsible for color reproductions from converted RGB color.
3. All digital files should include both printer and screen fonts. We strongly recommend limiting font usage to Mac platform fonts and sending only the fonts used in your files. Do not use system fonts or the toolbar styles in Quark Xpress. Make sure that all fonts supplied to ARTnews are postscript fonts.
4. All images should be supplied on disk and be high resolution, at least 300 dpi.
5. The size of your document should correspond to the size requirements of the ARTnews Ad Specification sheet. If your advertisement is intended to bleed please extend the background color or image by 1/8" beyond the trim on all four sides. Bleed is not available for 1/4 and 1/8 ads.
6. Please give your file an appropriate name that is nine characters (numbers or letters) or less. Do not use these symbols in the filename (!@#$%^&*-+).
7. Please label your disk with your company name. If you would like materials to be returned you must provided shipping information and state that materials be returned to you. Otherwise ARTnews will hold materials on hand for 90 days after the issue date and then destroy them.
